
ABOUT DR. KANHERE

Dr Tejas (TJ) Kanhere is an Australian trained Specialist Pain Medicine Physician with experience in all aspects of pain management including for chronic spinal pain, pain in hypermobility, neuropathic and widespread pain. He has over a decade of medical experience since finishing medical school at the University of Melbourne in 2010, and has completed specialist training at the Michael J Cousins Pain Management and Research Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital and at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.

As a compassionate physician, Dr. Kanhere is deeply committed to providing personalised care for his patients. His holistic approach to pain management integrates a variety of modalities, including medication optimisation, physical therapy, pain education and minimally invasive interventional procedures where appropriate to make a meaningful difference for his patients and improve quality of life.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Kanhere is actively involved in training and mentorship for the next generation of pain medicine physicians. He is an accredited supervisor of training and a member of the Faculty of Pain Medicine examinations committee. He holds a public appointment as a staff specialist at Concord Hospital, and is also affiliated with the University of New South Wales. Dr Kanhere has also previously completed a Bachelors Degree in Computer Systems Engineering and has a research interest in the use of virtual reality and artificial intelligence in clinical care.

Dr Kanhere has experience with a myriad of pain conditions including:

Primary pain conditions including chronic widespread pain, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome

Cancer-related pain including secondary to treatment (post surgical, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy)

Neuropathic pain including central (eg post spinal cord injury or CVA) and peripheral (peripheral nerve injury)

Visceral pain including abdominal and pelvic pain.

Treatment options are individualised based on the patient but may include medication management, physical therapy, pain education and minimally invasive interventional procedures where appropriate to optimise patient outcomes and improve quality of life.

Prior to your appointment you will require a referral letter from your general practitioner to see Dr Kanhere.
An initial assessment will take around one hour. Follow up reviews will take between 20-30 minutes.

You are welcome to bring a support person (e.g. partner / parent / friend) to the review, however depending on the situation Dr Kanhere may request your support person to leave the room for part of the assessment.
Please bring with you any available medical records including imaging results, prior specialist correspondence and recent blood test results. If you do not have recent blood test results this will be organised as part of your first visit.
